"Man must rise above the Earth - to the top of the atmosphere and beyond - for only thus will he
fully understand the world in which he lives."
- Socrates, Philosopher
"Astronomy compels the soul to look upward, and leads us from this world to another."
- Plato, Philosopher
"Astronomy is useful because it raises us above ourselves; it is useful because it is grand;
.... It shows us how small is man's body, how great his mind, since his intelligence can
embrace the whole of this dazzling immensity, where his body is only an obscure point,
and enjoy its silent harmony."
- Henri Poincare, Physicist
"To confine our attention to terrestrial matters would be to limit the human spirit."
- Stephen Hawking, Astrophysicist
"Not only are we in the universe, the universe is in us. I don’t know of any deeper spiritual
feeling than what that brings upon me."
- Neil deGrasse Tyson, Astrophysicist
"For my part I know nothing with any certainty but the sight of the stars makes me dream."
- Vincent Van Gogh, Painter
"It is reasonable to hope that in the not too distant future we shall be competent to understand
so simple a thing as a star."
- Arthur Eddington, Astrophysicist
The above quotes make one realize that the vast expanse of the cosmos is intimately linked to
our inner cosmos, our existence and our consciousness. The study of Astronomy has made humans
wonder about the Universe from the very dawn of civilization. With the advent of scientific
concepts and mathematical methodologies, the distant universe, the stars and galaxies are within
our comprehension but, with the limitations of our knowledge. Astronomy and Space Science has
become an integral part of human endeavour to know the unknown, to push forward the boundaries
of our knowledge and perceptions. The subjects have become key areas of studies and research
worldwide. India is making giant strides in these fields and an exciting environment in
opportunities and excellence is being felt by the scientific community. With the dream and
objective to nucleate a research and academic centre dedicated to Astronomy, Astrophysics,
Space Science and Earth Science, Institute of Astronomy Space and Earth Science was formed
in May, 2022 to actively participate in the research activities in these fields, to educate
the student community and the general people about the wonders of these subject and to provide
learning experience to interested people. It is a giant leap of faith for a group of scientists
to build an institute in Kolkata, India which one day may become a vibrant centre for learning,
research and global collaborative effort in these emergent fields of science and technology.
We can only hope that whole hearted support and well wishes will help the institute to form,
evolve and reach a critical potential to fulfil the its objectives.
